Q: Is it really necessary to cleanse my face in the morning if I thoroughly
cleansed before I went to bed?
This is a great question and one that I get a lot. I’ve had people tell me that their skin stills feels moisturized from their night cream when they wake up so they skip their morning skin care regimen altogether. This is NOT a good skin care practice by any means. Believe it or not our bodies go through a lot while we are sleeping and even though you have given your face a thorough cleansing, toning and moisturizing we need to repeat these steps in the morning. Sebum builds up on our skin during the night; your face comes into contact with your pillow case, sheets, blanket and even your hair if it’s long. So not only do you wake up with excess oil on your skin, you also have debris left behind from your Nighttime products as well as whatever you may have come into contact with during your sleep. You must give your face a nice cleansing in the morning and reapply your Toner, Serum, Moisturizer and Eye products. Your products will always work their best when they are applied to a freshly clean face.
Q: I have been having some issues with my skin lately. Is it possible to apply too much moisturizer?
Yes! You can definitely go into product overload if you aren’t careful. And, in many cases if you do use too much product your skin can negatively react. Your pores may clog, your skin might be itchy and you may even notice a few breakouts occurring. You don’t need a lot of moisturizer to do the job; you just need to be sure you are covering all of the necessary areas. Start out with a small “pea” sized amount or just one pump, being sure to cover your cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip and end with your chin. If you think you need a little more moisturizer in a specific area just add a little bit more. It’s better to gradually add moisturizer a little at a time then be stuck with too much product on your skin.
Q: How can I ensure that my Day and Nighttime Moisturizers are working to
their fullest potential?
It’s easy! Always start with clean skin so there are no barriers to prevent your moisturizing products from penetrating into your skin. And the best way to ensure proper absorption is to be sure to exfoliate your skin on a regular basis. We want to get those dead and dying skin cells out of the way so our favorite products can do their job. I always say that there’s no point in wasting good product on dead skin. Be sure to use your exfoliating scrub 1 to 3 times a week. Freshly cleansed and exfoliated skin will help your products deliver their fullest potential.
Q: What is the best way to apply moisturizer to my skin? Is there some special trick I should know about?
Applying moisturizer to your face takes a bit of practice to ensure you are using the right amount of product and that you are covering all areas that need to be covered. I have found two successful ways of applying creams and lotions. Hopefully one will be perfect for you. The first is the 5 dot method. For this practice you simply pump your moisturizer onto your fingertip. Then, place 5 dots of product on your face; one dot on your forehead, nose, chin and each cheek. Once the dots are in place you simply blend outwards and upwards against gravity until all areas are covered. Based on the condition of your skin you will be able to determine if 1 pump of product is enough. The second way to apply moisturizer is to pump the product into the palm of your clean hand. I would start with just one pump at first. Rub your palms together about 2 to 3 times. This will ultimately warm the product up a bit for when you massage into your skin. You can start with your cheeks which are usually the dryest, move up to your forehead, nose and end with your chin. If you have ever had a facial this is probably how your product was applied. Give each method a try and see which one you prefer!
Q: Sometimes when I cleanse my skin it stings. What am I doing wrong?
A: The best way to cleanse your skin to avoid any type of stinging is to dampen your hands and face with warm water. Then squeeze a dollop of cleanser into your damp hand. Rub your hands together and then gently, in a circular motion, massage into your skin. Sometimes, especially for those who have skin sensitivity, applying the concentrated ingredients in a cleanser directly to dry skin can cause a bit of irritation and stinging. By having water as buffer…problem solved.
Q: Does going to sleep with mascara on cause wrinkles?
A: Sleeping with mascara on won’t cause wrinkles but it’s not a good thing to do. It can cause a bacterial infection and depending on just how much you are wearing, may get into your eyes causing them to redden and swell. And let’s not forget the fabulous raccoon eyes you will definitely wake up with. Take the extra minute or two to cleanse your skin before bedtime to remove all traces of makeup. It’s the healthiest thing for your skin.
Q: Can I wash my face with bar soap?
A: Well you certainly can but it’s not the best thing for your skin. Many bar soaps are developed to clean the entire body, not just the face. Because of this they tend to contain much harsher ingredients and contain more detergents and deodorizers. The average bar soap is simply too harsh and can strip your skin of its necessary, healthy oils. It’s always best to keep the bar soaps for the body and use a facial cleanser to wash your face.
